Carson High School is a four-year public high school in Carson, California, United States. It is a part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Carson High was ranked 974 on Newsweek's 1300 Top U.S. High Schools. Carson High is located on the corner of 223rd Street and Main Street. Carson's rivalry with Banning High School in Wilmington, Los Angeles, California is one of the top high school rivalries in the South Bay region of Los Angeles.
Carson High offers eight small learning communities (SLCs) to its students. It is a school within a school. It is mandatory that each student be enrolled in one of these smaller education communities. As of Fall 2008, each SLC had its own building on campus.
The following AP classes are offered at Carson which give students high school credit and college credit if they pass the AP test in May with a 3 or higher.
Carson High's drama is led by teacher Terri Ann Sullilvan.The drama and theater program welcomes any student willing to inspire and impact others with their own imagination and acting skills. The drama club, also led by Sullivan and drama students, is a place that is welcoming and fun for student trying to find themselves. Carson's Drama also doesnt discriminate students based on race, religion, political views, gender, genre, or sexual orientaion, it is left open for people of all types. And starting as of 2008, Carson High's drama is now part of the thespian soiety for young student actors.
Carson High School's "Blue Thunder" Marching Band is led by Band Director, Dion Pittman. The Marching Band is the loudest pep organization in the school, and is dedicated to playing at Carson High's football games, pep rallies, and parades. At the moment, the band consists of 40 students: 27 horns; 5 Trumpets, 2 Tubas, 1 Baritone horn, 1 Mellophone, 4 Trombones, 3 Alto saxophones, 2 Tenor saxophones, 3 Piccolo flutes, and 6 Clarinets & 13 in the drumline; 5 Snare drums, 4 Bass drums, 2 Tenor drums, and 2 Cymbals.
Carson High's Academic Decathlon is coached by Science and ASA Teacher, Ms. Debbie Morris. Academic Decathlon allows 9 students to participate in scholarly competition against other high schools in the greater Los Angeles area. The team consists of 3 Honors (A students), 3 Scholastic (B Students) and 3 Varsity (C students) as well as team researchers. Students are tested in 10 subjects: Art, Language & Literature, Music, Economy, Math, Science, Speech, Interview, Essay, and Super Quiz.
Carson High's The Trailblazer is a student-run newspaper. The newspaper is released monthly. The advisor is Dr. Gregory Vieira.
The Carson Colts football team has won 11 Los Angeles City Section championships, including 8 under legendary coach Gene Vollnogle, who was had the highest winning percentage of any coach in California high school history when he retired.
Carson Colt football team is the winner of 11 city titles and 2 state championships.
The Carson Colts undefeated girl's tennis team has won 10 straight Marine League titles, going on for their 11th, under head coach, Gordon Emi.
Carson High School is the second school to 3-peat at USA Nationals (2004, 2005, 2006) and are also the originators of twirling three and four flags. Carson is also known for their "show-off" line. They earned back-to-back wins at USA Nationals in both 1 and 2 Flag divisions in 2005 and 2006. Flaggies is coached and choreographed from alumni Elizabeth "Liz" Millares. Flaggies brought much publicity to pep flags when they were featured in Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" video in 2005.
Carson Highschool's Streetdance (Also known as CSD) has been a successful Hip-hop dance team since it was created. A close-knit hip hop team at Carson High School was founded in 1999 by 4 girls who shared the same passion for hip hop dance. Through all the competitions and showcases came the start of the All Male, All Female, and Co-Ed Medium/Large teams. Carson Streetdance is known for their use of various styles of dance and forms of hip hop such as breaking, locking, popping, and choreo. They are also known for their winning run of championships from 2000 to 2005. CSD was recently featured in Macy Gray's "Beauty in the World" Music Video.
As of the school year 2008-09, there were a total of 3,552 students attending the high school.
