LearnBoost welcomes Mesa Detention
Otay Mesa is a mostly rural community within the city of San Diego, California, just north of the U.S.–Mexico border. It is bordered by the Otay River Valley and the city of Chula Vista on the north, Interstate 805 on the west, and county land on the east. Although physically separated from the rest of San Diego by the intervening cities of National City and Chula Vista, it is part of the city of San Diego, connected by a strip of land running underwater in the San Diego Bay, and is included in city council district 8.
State Route 905 connects Otay Mesa and Interstate 805.
The Otay Mesa Port of Entry is one of two border crossings within the city of San Diego, California, the other being the San Ysidro Port of Entry six miles to the west. Otay Mesa also houses an immigration detention center.
South of the border between the United States and Mexico, the same region continues within the municipality of Tijuana, Baja California, but is a residential and industrial area called "Mesa de Otay" and is 1 of 9 Delegaciones (boroughs) of Baja California's Tijuana municipality.
Some of the earliest flights in U.S. history occurred in the vicinity of Otay Mesa through the experimentation of aviation pioneer John J. Montgomery.
